Udaipur and Mount Abu (with or without Kumbhalgarh)

Both start in Udaipur with the City Palace, Jagdish Temple and Lake Pichola, and end in Mount Abu with Nakki Lake, Guru Shikhar and the Dilwara Jain Temples. Udaipur – Mount Abu spends a second day in Udaipur; Udaipur – Mount Abu – Kumbhalgarh swaps it for a night at Kumbhalgarh Fort and a stop at Ranakpur Jain Temple, which makes Day 3 a long drive of about 5–6 hours.

Ranakpur and Dilwara are Jain temples with dress codes and restricted tourist hours. Leather items are not allowed inside.

Kumbhalgarh: a resort weekend from Udaipur

Kumbhalgarh is about 85 km from Udaipur (around 2–2.5 hours). The trip stays at an Aravalli resort, with the light-and-sound show (ticket extra), a guided walk inside the fort and Ranakpur. The fort walk involves steep ramparts; avoid April–June afternoons there because of the heat.

Jaisalmer: the fort and a desert-camp night

Day 1 is a guided walk through Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila) and Patwon ki Haveli; Day 2 goes via Bada Bagh and Kuldhara to a Swiss-tent camp at the Sam dunes, with a short camel ride and a folk evening. Desert nights are cold in December and January, so carry a warm layer. The best season is October to March.

The Rajasthan Grand Circuit

  • Jaipur, Pushkar, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and the Sam dunes, Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh, Udaipur, and a Mount Abu day trip.
  • About 1,700 km in total; days 4, 6, 7 and 9 are long drive days, the longest around 6 hours.
  • The Jaisalmer leg goes out and back via Jodhpur, as no shorter road links Jaisalmer to Udaipur.
  • 9N on quad sharing (8 hotel + 1 desert camp), with breakfast and dinner.
